Quranic Dua for Solar Eclipse

by | Jul 7, 2025 | Quran courses

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to make dua during a solar eclipse. There are no specific Quranic verses mandated for recitation during an eclipse, and no exact wording is prescribed for the prayer itself.

Noticing an eclipse, several profound lessons can be observed, and several Quranic verses are especially fitting to recite at such a time. For example,

1. Seeking Forgiveness:

The sudden disappearance of the sun reminds us that life can change in an instant, and we must turn back to our Lord before it’s too late. This also reminds us of the day after and what will happen.

Quranic Dua:

Translation:

‘Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have mercy on us, and You are the best of the merciful “surah Al Muimnoon”.

2. Asking for Guidance

An eclipse reflects uncertainty, since the universe can change its rules in a minute. This reminds us of how much we need Allah’s light to navigate life. It’s a time to ask for clarity, wisdom, and steadfastness in faith.

Quranic Dua:

Translation:

Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” (Surah Aal-Imran 3:8)

3. Seeking Protection

The eclipse evokes awe and sometimes fear, reminding us of our vulnerability. We seek protection not only from physical harm, but from spiritual darkness and unseen trials.

Quranic Dua:

Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ (112):
Say, “He is Allah, [who is] One,
Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

Surah Al-Falaq (113):
Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.
From the evil of that which He created
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
And from the evil of the blowers in knots
And from the evil of an envious person when he envies.”

Surah An-Nās (114):
Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.
The Sovereign of mankind
The God of mankind
From the evil of the whisperer who withdraws
Who whispers in the breasts of mankind?
Among jinn and men

4. Remembering the Day of Judgment

The eclipse is a visible sign that mirrors descriptions of the Last Day in the Quran:

“And the moon is eclipsed, and the sun and the moon are joined together.” (Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:8-9).

It’s a call to prepare for the moment when the world will end and all will stand before their Lord.

We reflect this on life fragility, that the world and all its comforts are temporary. This encourages us to prioritize the hereafter and not be deceived by worldly stability.

Quranic Dua:

Translation:

“Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous.”

5. Renewing Humility in Worship

Eclipses revive the heart from heedlessness and encourage prayer, charity, and good actions. Many become used to performing their daily prayers with little focus. It serves as a spiritual wake-up call, shaking hearts from heedlessness.

 Quranic Dua:

translation:

“My Lord, make me and my descendants maintain prayer; our Lord, accept my supplication.” (Surah Ibrahim 14:40)

6. Recognizing Divine Power and Control

The eclipse is a cosmic sign showing that even the sun and moon are subject to Allah’s will.   It resembles a visible demonstration of Allah’s control over the universe and increases our certainty that everything happens by His command.

Quranic Dua:

Surah Āl ‘Imrān 3:26–27:

translation:

“Say, ‘O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will, and You humble whom You will. In your hands is all good. Indeed, you are over all things.

You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living; and You give provision to whom You will without account.’”

7. Balancing Fear and Hope

Just as light returns after the darkness, the eclipse reminds us that Allah’s mercy always follows hardship. It reminds believers that even perfection may be interrupted, and then restored, signifying both fear of divine punishment and hope in divine mercy, such as the following dua.

Quranic Dua:

translation:

“And those who say, ‘Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering; indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence.

8. Pondering the Wisdom Behind All Signs

An eclipse is not a random event; it is a deliberate sign from Allah. It invites us to ponder the perfection of His creation and our smallness before His majesty

 Quranic Dua:

translation:

“Our Lord, You did not create this [universe] aimlessly; exalted are You! So protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
“Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly. Glory be to You! Protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Surah Aal-Imran 3:191
