About the Online Tajweed Course at Quranica

Our methodology on our Tajweed classes is based upon years of experience and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by non-native speakers.

We’ve put a lot of thought into designing the levels of our Quran Tajweed program

First, we’ll start with the basics to make sure you have a strong foundation in Noorani Qaida. Then, we’ll move on to basic and advanced Tajweed rules.

Here is what our Tajweed course offers:

  • Understanding the Makharij (مخارج): Learn the correct articulation points of each Arabic letter.
  • Mastering Tajweed Rules (أحكام): Study the rules governing Quranic recitation, such as Ikhfa, Idgham, and Qalqalah.

Practical Application of Tajweed: Recite the Quran with tajweed every session and get feedback from experienced Hafiz.

Level 1 - Tajweed Basics Phase

We start with the fundamentals of Arabic letters, ensuring you master the correct pronunciation from the very beginning, InshaAllah. The student should be at least 4 years old.

Introduction to Tajweed

Here, we will explore the very heart of Tajweed: its definition, its purpose, and why it is so important for every Muslim. We will reflect upon the divine command to recite the Quran with “Tartil,” as mentioned in Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:4), and how Tajweed helps us fulfill this sacred duty.

The purpose of Tajweed is to ensure that every letter is pronounced from its correct articulation point (Makhraj) and with its proper characteristics (Sifat).

You will learn the history and significance of this science and how it preserves the Quran as it was revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Understanding Makharij (Articulation Points)

This is where you will master the correct pronunciation of every Arabic letter. You will learn exactly where each sound originates – from the deepest part of your throat for letters like ع (Ayn) as in “عَلِيم”, and ح (Ḥāʾ) as in “حَكِيم”, to the tip of your tongue for letters like ل (Lām) as in “لَيْلَة”, and ن (Nūn) as in “نُور”.

Also, you’ll learn to differentiate between letters that sound similar but have distinct origins, like “ت” (ta) and “ط” (ṭa).

For example, when reciting the word “مُسْتَقِيمَ” (Mustaqeem – Straight) from Surat Al-Fatiha, the “ت” should be pronounced from the tip of the tongue touching the base of the upper front teeth, while the “ط” in a word like “الطَّامَّةُ” (At-Taammah – The Overwhelming Event) from Surat An-Nazi’at requires the tip of the tongue to touch the gum line behind the upper front teeth.

Honing Your Quran Listening and Pronunciation Skills

Through interactive exercises and personalized feedback, you’ll refine your ability to hear and reproduce the subtle nuances of Arabic sounds. We’ll use spoken examples and practice to make sure you can tell the difference between a correctly pronounced letter and one that needs a little more work.

For example, we will work to differentiate between the letter Qaf “ق” as in the word “قَلَمٍ” (Qalam – Pen) and the letter Kaf “ك” as in the word “كِتَابٍ” (Kitab – Book) as many students often mispronounce these two letters.

Level 2 - Foundational Mastery in Tajweed

This level takes a closer look at Arabic letters and introduces the Ottoman script, which is the fancy calligraphy used in the Mushaf. The student should be at least 8 years old and requires initial training in Quranic words to enhance Quran recitation skills.

Exploring the Ottoman Calligraphy to Read Quran with Tajweed Properly

You’ll learn to recognize the unique characteristics of the Ottoman script and understand how it differs from modern Arabic script. This will enhance your ability to read directly from the Mushaf (the physical copy of the Quran).

Mastering the Sifaat (Characteristics of Letters)

You’ll learn about the Sifaat, the characteristics of letters, such as whispering, hissing, and strength. For example, you’ll understand the difference in the characteristic of “هـ” (ha), which is a soft, airy letter, as in the word “اللَّهُ” (Allah), and “ح” (ḥa), which is a stronger letter pronounced from the middle of the throat, as in the word “الرَّحْمَٰنُ” (Ar-Rahman – The Most Merciful).

Also, there is the gentle whisper of س (Seen) as in “سَمِيع”, and the strength of ص (Ṣād) as in “صِرَاط”.

Also, there is the gentle whisper of س (Seen) as in “سَمِيع”, and the strength of ص (Ṣād) as in “صِرَاط”. This precise understanding is a foundation of beautiful and accurate Quran recitation.

Introduction to Basic Tajweed Rules

We’ll introduce you to fundamental Tajweed rules, such as the rules of  Noon Saakin (نْ) and Tanween (ً ٍ ٌ). You will learn how to apply rules like Idgham (merging), Ikhfaa’ (concealment), Idh-har (clarity).

For example, Idh-har when Noon Saakin or Tanween is followed by any of the throat letters (ء ه ع ح غ خ), it is pronounced clearly. For instance, in “مِنْهُ” (Minhu), the Noon is pronounced clearly.

Level 3 - Advanced Tajweed Rules In-Depth

This level is designed for those who are truly passionate about mastering the finer details of Tajweed. Here, we will explore some of the more intricate and subtle aspects of Tajweed.

Delving Deeper in Madd (Elongation) Rules

Here, you will learn the rules of Madd, elongating certain letters under specific conditions. You will discover the different types of Madd, such as Madd Tabee’ee (Natural Madd) and Madd Far’ee (Secondary Madd), and learn how to apply them correctly.

Then, you’ll learn abot Madd Far’ee has various subcategories, such as Madd Muttasil (Connected Madd) which occurs when a Madd letter is followed by a Hamzah in the same word, like in “جَاء” (Jā’a – He came, elongated for 4-5 counts), and Madd Munfasil (Separated Madd) which occurs when a Madd letter is at the end of a word and a Hamzah is at the beginning of the next word, like in  “إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَا” (Innā A’ṭaynā – Indeed, We have given you, elongated for 4-5 counts).

In-Depth Exploration of Idgham and Its Types

In this section, we will delve deeper into the concept of Idgham (merging). You will learn about the various types of Idgham, such as Idgham with Ghunnah (merging with nasalization) which occurs with the letters ي ن م و and Idgham without Ghunnah which occurs with the letters ل and ر.

You will practice reciting verses like “مِن رَّبِّكَ” (Mir-Rabbika) where the Noon Saakin merges with the Raa without nasalization. You will also learn about Idgham with Ghunnah in detail, as in “مِنْ وَلِيّ” (Miwwaliyy) where the Noon Saakin merges with the Waw, accompanied by a nasal sound. Mastering Idgham will greatly enhance the fluidity and beauty of your Quran recitation.

Common Tajweed Mistakes and Their Correction

We will address some of the most common mistakes made in Tajweed, even those that might seem minor but can affect the meaning of the verses. We will focus on identifying these errors and, more importantly, learning how to correct them.

For example, a common mistake is incorrectly applying the rules of Ikhfaa’, leading to an unclear or incorrect pronunciation of Noon Saakin or Tanween. Another common mistake is not elongating Madd letters for the correct number of counts.

You’ll get to use all the Tajweed rules in a consistent and thorough way, paying close attention to every rule of Tajweed you have learned, from the Makharij and Sifaat of each letter to the rules of Madd, Waqf, and Idgham.

Connecting Tajweed to Tafsir

In this final stage, you will explore the beautiful relationship between Tajweed and Tafsir (Quranic exegesis). You will learn how the correct application of Tajweed can enhance your understanding of the Quran’s meanings.
