Quranic Verses on Ramadan (Quotes in Arabic & English)

by | Apr 23, 2025 | Quran courses

Ramadan is honored in the Quran as the month when divine guidance—the Quran—was first revealed, making it a time of deep reflection, mercy, and spiritual renewal. Fasting is prescribed with compassion, allowing exceptions for ease, while Laylat al-Qadr, a night better than a thousand months, offers unmatched blessings. At Quranica, expert-led courses help you connect with these sacred moments through recitation, Tajweed, and memorization.

Actually, the Quran explicitly mentions Ramadan just once; but it dedicates specific verses to explain its significance, its rulings, and its profound spiritual purpose.

Let’s reflect together on some of these key Quranic quotes about Ramadan, fasting and the most important night in Ramadan.

The Foundational Quote from Quranic Verses on Ramadan

Why is Ramadan so uniquely honored? Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala clarifies this in the very next verses, linking it directly to the greatest blessing bestowed upon humanity: the Quran itself.

Allah says:

“شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِّنَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالْفُرْقَانِ”

(Shahru ramaḍānal-ladhī ‘unzila fīhil-qur’ānu hudal-linnāsi wa bayyinātim-minal-hudā wal-furqān…)

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion (between right and wrong)…” (Al-Baqara 2:185)

Think about this profound connection! Ramadan is eternally distinguished because Allah chose this month to begin sending down His final revelation – the Quran, our هُدًى (huda), our guidance. It came with بَيِّنَاتٍ (bayyināt), clear proofs, leaving no doubt about its truth, and as الْفُرْقَانِ (al-furqān), the criterion that helps us distinguish truth from falsehood, right from wrong.

Therefore, Ramadan is intrinsically the month of the Quran. It’s a time to renew our relationship with the Book of Allah – through recitation, reflection, and striving to understand its meanings.

Understanding Ramadan’s Rulings Through Quranic Verses

While fasting is prescribed, Allah, in His infinite mercy, acknowledges human needs and limitations. He doesn’t intend hardship for us. The continuation of the previous verse highlights this beautiful balance.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says, regarding those who are ill or traveling:

(…Faman shahida minkumush-shahra falyaṣumh(u), wa man kāna marīḍan ‘aw ‘alā safarin fa’iddatum-min ‘ayyāmin ‘ukhar(a).

“…So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.” (Al-Baqara 2:185)

Notice the explicit declaration: يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ (Yurīdullāhu bikumul-yusra wa lā yurīdu bikumul-‘usra) – “Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.” This is a fundamental principle in Islam. The concessions for the sick and traveler demonstrate this mercy.

The verse then reminds us of the purpose: وَلِتُكْمِلُوا الْعِدَّةَ (wa litukmilul-‘iddata) – to complete the prescribed number of days (making up missed fasts later), وَلِتُكَبِّرُوا اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَاكُمْ (wa litukabbirullāha ‘alā mā hadākum) – to glorify Allah (especially on Eid) for having guided us to this path, and وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ (wa la’allakum tashkurūn) – so that you may be grateful. Gratitude (shukr) is the natural response of a heart that recognizes Allah’s blessings and His guidance.

Committing these powerful words of mercy and purpose to heart is a rewarding journey, one we guide students through in our Quran Memorization (Hifz) Programs at Quranica. It helps internalize these divine principles.

The Quranic Verses on The Most Imporatant Night in Ramadan

Within the blessed month of Ramadan lies the night that is so special, so valuable, that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala dedicated an entire Surah to it. This is Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree or Power.

Its significance is tied directly to the Quran itself and the immense mercy Allah pours down during this time.

Understanding this night helps us appreciate the sheer scale of blessings available to us in Ramadan.

Allah reveals its majesty in Surah Al-Qadr:

(Bismillāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm) (1. ‘Innā ‘anzalnāhu fī laylatil-qadr) (2. Wa mā ‘adrāka mā laylatul-qadr) (3. Laylatul-qadri khayrum-min ‘alfi shahr) (4. Tanazzalul-malā’ikatu war-rūḥu fīhā bi’idhni rabbihim-min kulli ‘amr) (5. Salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭla’il-fajr)

“In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.” “1. Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree.” “2. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?” “3. The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.” “4. The angels and the Spirit [Jibreel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.” “5. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-5)

Allah begins by confirming the Quran’s revelation happened on this specific night

He then gives us a glimpse: خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ – “better than a thousand months.” This isn’t just a mathematical comparison; it signifies an immense, incomparable blessing. Worship performed on this single night surpasses the reward of worship performed over 83 years! SubhanAllah, the generosity of our Lord!

Finally, the entire night, from sunset until dawn (حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ), is described as سَلَامٌ (Salām) – Peace. It’s a night of tranquility, safety, and immense spiritual serenity.
