Quranic Scientific Miracles

by | Apr 23, 2025 | Quran courses

The Quran is not a science textbook. The Quran is a book of guidance, a book of wisdom, a book of iman. But within its verses, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) has placed signs, ayat, for those who think, for those who reflect.

And some of these ayat, subhanAllah, speak about the world around us in ways that are… truly amazing. They show us that this Book is not from a man who lived 1400 years ago in the desert. It is from the Creator of the universe Himself!

What Are Quranic Scientific Miracles?

Scientific miracle in Quran means when Quran tells us about a scientific fact that people did not know when Quran was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). And only now, in our time, science has discovered these facts.

This is also a big sign that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is a real messenger from Allah. Because he was “ummi” – he could not read or write. So, how could he know these scientific things unless Allah told him? This proves that whatever he (peace be upon him) said about these scientific things is true, and it’s from Allah.

Now, some people might say, “Oh, this is just coincidence!” Or, “You are reading too much into it!”

But when you see it again and again, and when the best scientists, even non-Muslim ones, are left speechless… you know it is something more. We call this I’jaz al-Quran – the inimitability of the Quran. It is a proof that the Quran is the word of Allah.

Now, let’s look at some examples of Quranic facts proven by science:

1. Quran Told Us The Universe Was Once Joined Together

Modern science says that Earth was part of the solar system and then separated. It cooled down and became a place where humans could live. Scientists see volcanoes and hot materials inside the Earth as proof of this.

Quran told us this a long time ago! Allah says:

“أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ”

“Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, then We separated them, and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:30)

The word “رَتْقًا” means joined together, and “فَتَقْنَاهُمَا” means We separated them. This ayah describes what science tells us about the beginning of the universe.

2. The Expansion of the Universe Found in the Quran

Many years ago, scientists discovered that our universe is not static; it is actually expanding.

Think of it like a balloon being blown up – everything is moving further away from everything else.

This was a huge discovery for science. But guess what? Allah mentioned this in the Quran over 1400 years ago!

Allah says in Surah Adh-Dhariyat (Chapter 51), verse 47:

“وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ”

“And the heaven We constructed with might, and indeed, We are [its] expanders”.

Look at the word “لَمُوسِعُونَ” (lamūsiʿūn). In Arabic, this word means “indeed, We are expanders.” Isn’t that amazing? Allah, in His glorious Quran, told us about the expansion of the universe long before scientists had the tools to discover it!

Learning Step for Quranic Arabic:

When you see a word like “لَمُوسِعُونَ“, try to break it down. You might recognize the root “وسع” (wasiʿa), which means “to be wide” or “to expand.”

The prefix “لَـ” (laـ) means “indeed,” and the “ـُونَ” (ـūna) ending indicates a plural masculine subject.

So, even if you don’t know the exact verb form, understanding the root can give you a big clue about the meaning.

This is one of the things we focus on in our Quranica courses such as our Quranic Arabic Course – helping you understand the building blocks of the Arabic language in the Quran.

3. Embryonic Development Stages Found in the Quran

Another incredible example is how the Quran describes the stages of how a baby grows inside its mother.

Scientists have only recently, with advanced technology, been able to see these stages clearly.

But Allah described them in detail in the Quran many centuries ago!

The Quran describes these stages in detail in Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter 23), verses 12-14:

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ سُلَالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ

(And We did certainly create man out of a pure essence of clay.)

ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاهُ نُطْفَةً فِي قَرَارٍ مَكِينٍ

(Then We placed him as a drop [of seed] in a firm lodging.)

ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً فَخَلَقْنَا الْمُضْغَةَ عِظَامًا فَكَسَوْنَا الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ

(Then We made the drop into a clinging clot, then We made the clinging clot into a lump [of flesh], then We made the lump [of flesh] into bones, then We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.)

Look at the sequence described here:

  • “مِنْ سُلَالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ” (Min sulalatin min teen) – “Out of a pure essence of clay.” This refers to the very beginning, the elements that make up the human body.
  • “نُطْفَةً فِي قَرَارٍ مَكِينٍ” (Nutfahtan fee qararin makeen) – “A drop [of seed] in a firm lodging,” which is the womb.
  • “عَلَقَةً” (‘Alaqatan) – “A clinging clot.” This describes the early embryo which clings to the uterine wall. Science has shown that the embryo at this stage does resemble a leech or a blood clot.
  • “مُضْغَةً” (Mudhghatan) – “A lump [of flesh].” This is how the embryo looks a bit later, like a chewed piece of meat.
  • “عِظَامًا” (‘Izaaman) – “Bones.” Then the bones begin to form.
  • “لَحْمًا” (Lahman) – “Flesh.” And then the bones are covered with muscles and flesh.
  • “ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ” (Thumma ansha’nahu khalqan akhar) – “Then We developed him into another creation.” This refers to the development of the unique human characteristics, like the soul and intellect.

See how accurately the Quran describes the stages of development, in the exact order that scientists have discovered?

This is not something that could have been known by humans 1400 years ago without advanced scientific tools!

4. The Round Shape of the Earth Found in the Quran

For a long time, people thought the Earth was flat. But the Quran hints at the Earth’s spherical shape in a beautiful way in Surat Az-Zumar, (39:5):

“He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver”.

The word yukawwiru (يُكَوِّرُ) comes from the same root as the word for “ball” (kurah – كرة). It means to wrap something around something else, like you wrap a turban (‘imamah – عمامة) around your head.

This suggests a round shape, not a flat one. Only on a sphere can night and day “wrap” around each other continuously.

5. Quran Told Us The Earth is Constantly Moving

Many ayahs in Quran point to the Earth’s continuous movement as it rotates around itself.

As we mentioned for example, the “takwir” of the night and day (wrapping and rolling), and the way the night is “drawn out” from the day – meaning it gradually arises due to Earth’s movement.

Also, there is an ayah that mentions the night and day, along with the sun and the moon, all rotating and swimming in their orbits.

Allah says:

“وَهُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ”

“And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:33)

The word يَسْبَحُونَ “yasbahoon” means they swim or float, indicating a continuous motion in their respective orbits.

6. Lack of Oxygen at Higher Altitudes Found in the Quran

Modern science has discovered that the amount of oxygen decreases as we go higher in the atmosphere. This causes difficulty in breathing.

Quran described this by saying that the chest becomes tight and constricted as if one is climbing up into the sky.

Allah says:

” فَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَهْدِيَهُ يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ وَمَنْ يُرِدْ أَنْ يُضِلَّهُ يَجْعَلْ صَدْرَهُ ضَيِّقًا حَرَجًا كَأَنَّمَا يَصَّعَّدُ فِي السَّمَاءِ”

“So whoever Allah wants to guide – He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide – He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky.” (Surah Al-An’am, 6:125)
