Tajweed is the science that encompasses rules for beautifying and mastering the recitation of the Quran as it was revealed to our Prophet Mohamed. Many verses and Hadith on Tajweed emphasize the importance of applying Tajweed rules and the reward that results when you work hard to apply Tajweed rules.
Let`s explore what the Quran says about Tajweed and important Hadiths about Tajweed, then extract the importance of Tajweed from them.
Hadith about Tajweed:
Although the word “Tajweed” is not commonly found in Hadiths, we have authentic narrated hadiths that indicate the role of Tajweed in preserving the Holy Quran. For example:
1. Hadiths on Beautifying Our Voices with the Quran:
Prophet Muhammad emphasized the importance of Beautifying Our Voices with the Quran. This can not be achieved without understanding the Tajweed rules. See the following Hadiths:
Translation:
It was narrated that Al-Bara’ bin Azib said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Make your voices beautiful when you recite the Quran.
وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَتَغَنَّ بِالْقُرْآنِ» . رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيّ
Translation:
He reported God’s messenger as saying, “He does not belong to us who does not chant the Qur’ān.”Bukhārī transmitted it.
2. Hadith that mentions the best reciters:
The following hadith clarifies from whom the Qur’an should be learned. This highlights the importance of receiving the Quran correctly from individuals of mastery, which forms the foundation of tajweed based on oral transmission.
The manner in which the Prophet ﷺ encouraged the recitation of the Qur’an, and the way Abdullah ibn Mas’ud used to recite it, is characterized by beautiful voice, precise performance, and proper tartil (measured, deliberate recitation).
Translation:
`Abdullah bin `Amr mentioned `Abdullah bin Masud and said, “I shall ever love that man, for I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, ‘Take (learn) the Qur’an from four: `Abdullah bin Masud, Salim, Mu`adh and Ubai bin Ka`b.’
They care about all the knowledge of the Quran, including its recitation, mastering performance accuracy, and its meanings.
Narrated `Abdullah (bin Mas`ud): By Allah other than Whom none has the right to be worshipped! There is no Sura revealed in Allah’s Book but I know at what place it was revealed; and there is no Verse revealed in Allah’s Book but I know about whom it was revealed. And if I know that there is somebody who knows Allah’s Book better than I, and he is at a place that camels can reach, I would go to him.
3. Hadiths about the virtue of those Who Bond with the Quran:
Allah likes those who are devoted to the Qur’an, who preserve its recitation and precision. Tajweed is the key to maintaining both the beauty and precision of Qur’an recitation, but the reward deserves the hard work; you will connect with Allah`s word and become of Allah`s own people.
Translation:
It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Allah has His own people among mankind.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, who are they?’ He said: ‘The people of the Qur’an, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him.'”
4. Hadith shows the merit of perfecting recitation and pronouncing letters properly:
The purpose of the Tajweed is to Master reciting the Quran as it was revealed. The first step of achieving this is learning is to know how to pronounce letters as our Prophet learnt us. This Hadith differentiates between skilled persons and those who falter while reciting.
Translation:
‘Ā’isha reported God’s messenger as saying, “One who is skilled in the Qur’ān is associated with the noble, upright recording angels; and he who falters when reciting the Qur’ān and finds it difficult for him will have a double reward.”
The Hadith teaches us the virtue of those who recite the Qur’an fluently and with mastery — they are ranked with the noble, righteous angels. As for the one who struggles and stumbles in recitation due to difficulty, he receives a double reward: one for the act of recitation itself and another for the effort and hardship he endures. So why do not work hard to learn Tajweed rules?
5. Hadith shows the reward of those who memorize the Quran:
If you want to memorize the Quran, you should first learn Tajweed to recite correctly before you memorize any verse. You notice the importance of Tajweed when Hadith explicitly mentions tarteel (measured recitation), which requires precise, rhythmic recitation with Tajweed rules.
وعن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص رضي الله عنهماعن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: “يقال لصاحب القرآن: اقرأ وارتقِ ورتل كما كنت ترتل في الدنيا، فإن منزلتك عند آخر آية تقرؤها”. ((رواه أبو داود والترمذي وقال: حديث حسن صحيح)).
Translation:
‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The one who was devoted to the Qur’an will be told on the Day of Resurrection: ‘Recite and ascend (in ranks) as you used to recite when you were in the world. Your rank will be at the last Ayah you recite.”
Translation:
Ibn Mas’ūd reported God’s messenger as saying: “If anyone recites a letter of God’s Book, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward (Al-Qur’ān, 6: 160). I do not say that A.L.M are one letter*, but alif is a letter, lām is a letter, and mīm is a letter.” *These letters occur at the beginning of sūras 2, 3, 29, 30, 31, and 32. No satisfactory explanation of their meaning has been given. A brief discussion of them is given by Abdullāh Yūsuf Ali in The Holy Qur’ān, Text, Translation & Commentary (Lahore, 1934 and later editions), note 25. See also pp. 118-120.
Imagine you do not know Tajweed rules, you will not know about Huroof Muqatta’at (“disjointed letters”) that are mentioned in this Hadith, and you will not understand this Hadith. They are explained in Quranica tajweed course for beginners
6. Hadiths on Collective recitation of the Quran:
During the Journey of Learning Tajweed, you will join recitation sessions to correct your pronunciation and performance for a practical manifestation of Tajweed.
Translation:
Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: No people get together in a house of the houses of Allah (i.e. a mosque), reciting the Book of Allah, and learning it together among themselves, but calmness (sakinah) comes down to them, (Divine) mercy covers them (from above), and the angels surround them, and Allah makes a mention of them among those who are with Him.
7. Hadiths encourage us to Learn the Quran:
Prophet mohamed, peace be upon him, told us that those who learn and teach the Quran have many merits. We know that Learning and teaching the Quran includes tajweed, since teaching cannot be correct without accurate recitation.
From the following Hadiths, you will realize that Wisdom includes knowledge of the Quran and its recitation, and teaching, since our Prophet encouraged and enjoined us to hold fast to the Book of Allah. It entails accuracy and proper performance.
عَنْ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُكُمْ من تعلم الْقُرْآن وَعلمه» . رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيّ
Translation:
‘Uthmān reported God’s messenger as saying, “The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur’ān.
Translation:
Narrated Talha: I asked `Abdullah bin Abi `Aufa, “Did the Prophet (ﷺ) make a will (to appoint his successor or bequeath wealth)?” He replied, “No.” I said, “How is it prescribed then for the people to make wills, and they are ordered to do so, while the Prophet (ﷺ) did not make any will?” He said, “He made a will wherein he recommended Allah’s Book.”
Ibn Mas’ud reported God’s messenger as saying, “Two people only may be envied: a man to whom God has given property, empowering him to dispose of it on what is right; and a man to whom God has given wisdom who acts according to it and teaches it.” (Bukhari and Muslim).
What Does the Quran Say About Tajweed?
The Quran guided muslims to recite the Quran as it was revealed. In many verses, Allah uses the Arabic verb (رتل), which means to recite in a precise, slow, and deliberate manner.
For example,
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:121)
The following ayah states that to believe in the Quran, one should recite it correctly. Allah says that those who believe in the Quran يَتْلُونَهُ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ, which means “They recite it as it was revealed and do not distort it (and this requires Tajweed), and they permit what it permits and prohibit what it prohibits.
Arabic:
الَّذِينَ آَتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَتْلُونَهُ حَقَّ تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦۗ وَمَن يَكْفُرْ بِهِۦ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الْخَٰسِرُونَ
Translation:
“Those who have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it – it is they who are the losers.”
Surah Al-A’raf (7:204)
This Ayah commands us to give great attention and respect to the Quran. This requires the protection of the Quran from any mistakes.
Arabic:
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
Translation:
“When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it attentively and be silent so that you may be shown mercy.”
Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:4)
In the following Ayah, you will notice that Allah uses the verb, and Maf‘ūl Muṭlaq (absolute object), which is an accusative noun derived from the same root as the verb that precedes it, and it is used to emphasize the verb’s meaning. So this
Arabic:
وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا
Translation:
“Or add to it, and recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.”
This is an example of the benefits of learning Quranic Arabic. You will learn that when the verb “رتِّل” (recite) is followed by its Maf‘ūl Muṭlaq “ترتيلاً” (a measured recitation), which reinforces the command and stresses the importance of reciting the Qur’an slowly, carefully, and with proper Tajweed.
