The Difference Between Makhraj and Tajweed

by | Aug 3, 2025 | Tajweed for kids

Makhraj is the specific point of articulation for each Arabic letter, while Tajweed is the comprehensive science of rules that governs the entire act of Quranic recitation. In simple terms, Makhraj is one crucial part of the much broader science of Tajweed.

Think of Makhraj (plural: Makhārij) as the exact “exit point” of a letter’s sound from the throat, tongue, or lips. Mastering this is the first step to correct pronunciation.

For example, the letters ‘ح’ (Ḥā’) and ‘ه’ (Hā’) both sound like an ‘H’ to an untrained ear, but their Makhraj is different; ‘ح’ comes from the middle of the throat, while ‘ه’ comes from the deepest part.

Tajweed, on the other hand, is the complete framework. It includes knowing the Makhraj, but it also covers the characteristics (Sifat) of each letter, the rules of elongation (Madd), nasalization (Ghunnah), and how letters change when they are next to each other.

You cannot have correct Tajweed without first perfecting the Makhārij
