QURANICA – International Journal of Quranic Research, Vol.10, No.2, December 2018 – The Story of Adam in Quran: A Relational Frame Theory Interpretation

Quaranica study examines the story of Adam in the Quran from a cognitive and psycholinguistic perspective, specifically using Relational Frame Theory (RFT).  Instead of focusing on traditional Islamic interpretations like Adam’s role as Caliph, original sin, and repentance, or comparing the story to biblical accounts, this research analyzes the psychological processes involved.  It focuses on how the “tree” is presented, both as forbidden by God and as a source of prosperity and eternity by Satan.

By applying RFT, the study demonstrates how the relational framing and reframing of the “tree” influenced Adam’s changing attitude towards it.  It argues that these framing processes were crucial in shaping his behavior.  Furthermore, the research suggests that Adam’s verbal abilities and cognitive skills, which are central to his position as Caliph, are also implicated in his transgression.  Essentially, the same capacities that elevated him also contributed to his fall.

QURANICA – International Journal of Quranic Research, Vol.11, No.1, June 2019 – Group Theory and Set Point in The Holy Qur’an: Set Point in Verses, Sentences and Words in Surah Al-Baqarah As a Model

Quranica paper explores the symmetry within Surah Al-Baqarah of the Quran, applying Group Theory to demonstrate “set points” at various levels.  The authors propose a three-tiered structure of symmetry.  The first level divides the Surah into two halves (verses 2-57 and 58-113), where each Surah in the first half has a corresponding harmonic relationship with a Surah in the second half.  This symmetry is observed whether reading from the beginning or the end of each half.

This concept of corresponding halves extends to the second level, where individual verses or groups of verses within the Surah also exhibit this symmetrical relationship.  Finally, the third level applies the same principle to the words within each verse, demonstrating symmetry even at this granular level.  The fundamental principle underpinning all these levels is the concept of “identity (E),” which signifies that the beginning-to-beginning and beginning-to-end readings are applicable across all levels of symmetry.
