Do you often hear reciters say, ‘I’ve completed my Hizb? This makes you wonder what Hizb means in the Quran. Is learning what a Hizb is important for recitation?

A Hizb in the Quran is one of the 60 standardized sections used today to divide the Mushaf—each Juz contains two Hizbs—making recitation, memorization, and lesson planning easier and more organized.

In the following line, you will find answers to all your questions about Hizb in the Quran. You will discover how you can benefit from it.

What Does Hizb Mean in the Quran?

The term Hizb is an Arabic word that can carry various meanings, including “section” or “group.” However, the Ṣaḥābah (the Companions of the Prophet Mohamed, peace be upon him) used the word Hizb specifically to refer to the daily portions of the Quran that they would recite.

In today`s Quranic terminology, hizb refers to a formal printing and recitation sign used to divide the juz of the Quran into 2 equal sections, each called (Hizb).

So Hizb refers to divisions in the Mushaf that make the sixty-part system dividing the Quran into 60 nearly equal Hizb.. The divisions do not follow topics or surahs.

Recalling that each Juz is composed of two Hizb. Then each Hizb is further divided into 4 quarters (rub‘ al-hizb). This division has many uses, discussed below.

Uses of Hizb as a Quranic divider:

The system resulting from this division has many uses. As a result, it is well-known and widely used. For example,

1. Encourage You in Practical Recitation:

Hizb divisions facilitate practical recitation since you can plan a daily target or even a weekly target. This encourages you to complete the recitation. So, we use the Hizb division in our Online Quran classes for adults to refer to verses we will recite.

2. Facilitate Memorization and revision:

This is a logical result for Smaller, repeatable Hizb divisions. This division helps learners memorize the Quran efficiently and review it systematically. This helps you during the Quran Learning Journey.

3. Regulate Teaching Online and Offline:

Standardization of Hizb divisions ensures that students and teachers worldwide can reference the same verses of the Quran, making learning and teaching consistent and clear due to global uniformity and standardization of online and printed Mushafs.

Companions’ Way Of Hizb

The word “Hizb” is used in the prophetic context before today’s standard divisions arose. You can understand the word according to the text in which it is mentioned.

A. Hizb As  prophetic method of Quranic Division (فمي بشوق)

The companions and early muslims used the word Hizb for the nightly prayer routine. They sometimes used it for different divisions of the Quran that differ from today`s Hizb, as mentioned in the following Hadiths:

كَيْفَ تُحَزِّبُونَ الْقُرْآنَ قَالُوا ثَلاَثٌ وَخَمْسٌ وَسَبْعٌ وَتِسْعٌ وَإِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ وَثَلاَثَ عَشْرَةَ وَحِزْبُ الْمُفَصَّلِ ‏.‏

Aws said: “I asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘How did you use to divide up the Qur’an?’ They said: ‘A third, a fifth, a seventh, a ninth, an eleventh, a thirteenth, and Hizbul-Mufassal.’

The Hadith explains a method to complete reciting the Quran in a week. This weekly division is remembered by the mnemonic phrase “Fami Bishawq” (فمي بشوق), which combines the first letters of the surahs that begin each section.

They are described by scholars as the following Table

Day Letter in mnemonic فمي بشوقSurah that begins each Manzil
1فالفاتحة (Al-Fātiḥah)
2مالمائدة (Al-Mā’idah)
3ييونس (Yūnus)
4بالإسراء – بني إسرائيل (Al-Isrā’ – Banī Isrā’īl)
5شالشعراء (Ash-Shu‘arā’)
6والصافات (As-Sāffāt)
7قق (Qāf)

You can memorize the Quran and the habit of Quranic recitation according to the mentioned prophetic Quranic division in our Hifz and memorization course.

B. Hizb As Reference For the nightly prayer:

Sometime the word Hizb refers to having a habit of reciting a specific surahs in the night prayers as the following:

‘Umar b. Khattab reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Should anyone fall asleep and fail to recite his portion of the Qur’an, or a part of it, if he recites it between the dawn prayer and the noon prayer, it will be recorded for him as though he had recited it during the night.
