Izhar Mutlaq (Absolute Izhar) With Examples

by | Jul 1, 2025 | Quran courses, Tajweed for kids

Among the many refined rules of Tajweed is Izhar Mutlaq—a rare but important exception every serious student should master. While most Izhar rules follow clear phonetic patterns, Izhar Mutlaq occurs in just a few special cases where Noon Sakinah is followed by Yaa or Waw within the same word

Despite what the standard Idgham rule would suggest, here the Noon must be pronounced clearly, preserving the original structure and meaning of these rare words. It’s a small detail—but one packed with depth and significance.

Izhar Mutlaq Rules

Izhar Mutlaq is a unique and less common case of Izhar that every serious student should know. Izhar Mutlaq (إِظْهَار مُطْلَق) means “Absolute Izhar” because it is an exception to another rule.

Normally, if a Noon Sakinah is followed by a Yaa (ي) or a Waw (و), the rule of Idgham (merging) would apply.

However, when the Noon Sakinah and the Yaa or Waw occur together within the same word, the rule is Absolute Izhar.

The merging is cancelled to preserve the original meaning and structure of the word. There are only four such words in the entire Quran.

Words Of Izhar Mutlaq

The four words of Izhar Mutlaq are:

  1. دُنْيَا (Dunya)
  2. بُنْيَانٌ (Bunyan)
  3. صِنْوَانٌ (Sinwan)
  4. قِنْوَانٌ (Qinwan)

Let’s examine one of these cases.

Izhar Mutlaq Example from the Quran

In Surah As-Saff, Allah says:

“كَأَنَّهُم بُنْيَانٌ مَّرْصُوصٌ”

ka’annahum bunyanun marsus

“as though they are a structure joined firmly.”

In the word bunyanun, the Noon Sakinah (نْ) is followed by the letter Yaa (ي) within the same word. Instead of merging them (which would sound like ‘buyyanun’), the Noon is pronounced with Absolute Izhar. The ‘n’ sound is made clear and distinct.

Understanding these exceptions is a hallmark of deeper knowledge. Students can explore these nuances in our Advanced Tajweed Course.
