Izhar Halqi (The Izhar of the Throat) With Examples

by | Jul 1, 2025 | Quran courses, Tajweed for kids

One of the essential pillars of correct Quranic recitation is mastering Izhar, the rule of clarity in Tajweed. Among its types, Izhar Halqi holds special importance.

The term “Halqi” refers to the throat, and this rule is applied when certain throat letters follow a Noon Sakinah (نْ) or Tanween (ــً، ــٍ، ــٌ).

In such cases, the Noon or Tanween must be pronounced clearly, without any nasal sound or merging. Understanding the letters involved and how to apply the rule is key to preserving the beauty and precision of the Quran’s recitation.

Izhar Halqi

Izhar Halqi is the most common and widely discussed type of Izhar. It is called Izhar Halqi (إِظْهَار حَلْقِي) because the rule is triggered by six specific letters whose point of articulation (makhraj) is in the throat (Al-Halq).

1. Izhar in the Rule of Noon Sakinah and Tanween

The rule of Izhar Halqi occurs whenever a Noon Sakinah (a Noon with a sukoon: نْ) or a Tanween (the double vowel markings: ـًـــٍـــٌ) is immediately followed by one of the six throat letters.

When this happens, the ‘n’ sound of the Noon Sakinah or Tanween is pronounced clearly and distinctly, with no accompanying nasal sound (ghunnah).

2. The Six Throat Letters (Huruf Halqi)

The six letters that trigger Izhar Halqi are known as the Huruf Halqi (حُرُوفُ الْحَلْقِ), or “the letters of the throat.” They are:

  • Hamza (ء)
  • Haa (هـ)
  • ‘Ayn (ع)
  • Haa (ح)
  • Ghayn (غ)
  • Khaa (خ)

These letters are so named because their sound originates from different parts of the throat: the deepest part, the middle part, and the highest part.

3. Examples of Izhar Halqi in the Quran

Let’s look at some examples from the Quran to see this rule in action.

Izhar Halqi Example With Hamzah

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says:

“وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ”

wa lahum ‘adhabun aleem

“And for them is a painful punishment.”

The Tanween on the letter Baa (‘adhabun) is followed by the throat letter Hamza (ء) in the word ‘aleem.

Therefore, the ‘n’ sound of the Tanween is pronounced with complete clarity: ‘adhabun aleem, not ‘adhabunaleem or with any nasalization.

Izhar Halqi Example With Ghayn (غ)

In Surah Al-An’am, Allah says:

“مِنْ غَيْرِ”

 min ghayri

“from other than”

In this phrase, the Noon Sakinah (نْ) is followed by the throat letter Ghayn (غ). The ‘n’ sound of the Noon is pronounced with perfect clarity, without any buzzing or hiding: min ghayri.

Izhar Halqi Example With ‘Ayn (ع)

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says:

“مِنْ عِلْمٍ”

min ‘ilmin

“of knowledge”

Notice the Noon Sakinah (نْ) in min is followed by the throat letter ‘Ayn (ع) in ‘ilmin. This requires a clear and sharp pronunciation of the ‘n’ sound.

You must articulate the Noon fully before moving to the deep, constrictive sound of the ‘Ayn.

Izhar Halqi Example With Haa (ح)

In Surah Al-An’am, Allah says:

“عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ”

azeezun hakeem

“All-Mighty, All-Wise”

The Tanween on the letter Zay (زٌ) in ‘azeezun is followed by the throat letter Haa (ح) in hakeem. The ‘n’ sound of the Tanween is made apparent and distinct.

Izhar Halqi Example With Khaa (خ)

In Surah Aal-E-Imran, Allah says:

“مَنْ خَافَ”

man khaafa

“who feared”

The Noon Sakinah (نْ) in man is followed by the throat letter Khaa (خ). The rule of Izhar Halqi is applied, meaning the ‘n’ sound is pronounced explicitly and clearly before articulating the heavy sound of the Khaa. It should not sound like mang-khaafa, but a crisp man khaafa.

Izhar Halqi Example With Haa (هـ)

In Surah Al-Jathiyah, Allah says:

“إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا”

in hiya illa

“It is not but…”

In this phrase, the Noon Sakinah (نْ) in the word in is followed by the throat letter Haa (هـ) in the word hiya.

The ‘n’ sound of the Noon must be pronounced crisply and clearly. The tongue makes firm contact for the ‘n’ and then releases for the ‘h’ sound without any pause or nasal hum.
