Learning and Reading Quran on Phone During Period

by | Nov 1, 2025 | Quran courses

In a nutshell: During menstruation, women may recite and learn the Quran without restriction through memory or digital devices. Touching the physical Mushaf directly, however, remains prohibited unless a barrier is used. This guidance reflects the mercy and balance of Islamic rulings, ensuring continuous spiritual connection during this natural state.

This period of purification is a command from Allah, and your obedience in abstaining from certain acts is, in itself, a profound form of worship.

But this obedience often comes with a spiritual longing and, in our modern times, confusion.

You look at your phone, the Quran app just a tap away, and you wonder: “What am I permitted to do? Can I at least read Quran from my phone?”

Can You Recite Quran on Period?

According to the Rajih (the stronger and preferred opinion) among the scholars, it is permissible for a woman in a state of menstruation to recite the Quran.

This position is supported by major scholars such as Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Shaykh Ibn Baz, and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on them). Their reasoning is clear:

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah explained that women would menstruate during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there is no authentic, explicit sunnah (prophetic tradition) that forbids them from reciting the Quran.

The Prophet forbade them from Salah (prayer), and had recitation also been forbidden, the Prophet would have taught it clearly, and the Mothers of the Believers would have transmitted it.

This allowance is especially important for a woman who needs to recite, whether for study, for an exam, for fear of forgetting her Hifz, or for seeking healing (Ruqyah).

The primary condition for this allowance is that she recites from memory (from her heart) or from a device, but does not directly touch the physical Mushaf.

This leads us to the physical, printed Quran, known as the Mushaf. The ruling here is different.

Can a Woman Recite Quran from Physical Mushaf During Menstruation?

No, it is established by the consensus of the scholars that it is forbidden to touch the physical Mushaf directly without a state of ritual purity.

Allah Ta’ala says of the Quran in the Preserved Tablet, which the scholars have applied to the Mushaf we hold:

“إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ. فِى كِتَٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ. لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ”

“Innahoo la quraanun kareem. Fee kitaabim maknoon. La yamassuhooo illal mutahharoon”

“Indeed, it is a noble Qur’an. In a Register well-protected; None touch it except the purified.” (Surah Al-Waqi’ah, 77-79)

But what if you need to read from the Mushaf itself? This brings us to a key question: “can you read quran on your period with gloves?”

Can You Read Quran On Your Period With Gloves?

The answer is yes. The scholars who permit recitation state that if you need to read from the Mushaf, you may do so by using a barrier.

This can be clean gloves, a handkerchief, a page-turner, or any clean cloth that prevents your hand from directly touching the pages.

Reading Quran on a Phone During Period

You can read Quran on a phone during period. It is permissible for a woman on her menses to hold her phone, read the text from the screen.

A phone, tablet, or computer is not a Mushaf. A Mushaf is a bound book dedicated only to the text of the Quran.

Your phone is a device with thousands of functions—it is a calendar, a communication tool, and a camera. The Quranic text exists as data on this device, which is displayed on a screen, and it is not permanent in the way ink is on paper.

Based on the Rajih opinion that recitation is permissible, the phone becomes the ideal solution:

Because the device is not a Mushaf, do you need wudu to read Quran on phone?

Do You Need Wudu To Read Quran On Phone?

No. It is permissible to touch your phone and navigate the app without being in a state of wudu.

Can I Recite Quran from Memory on My Period?

Yes. you can recite Quran from memory on your period. Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) explained that the state of a menstruating woman is long and involuntary; therefore, she cannot be compared to one in a state of Janabah (major impurity after relations), who can perform ghusl (ritual bath) immediately.

Because your period lasts for many days, it is mercifully permitted to recite from memory.

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen also clarified that this allowance is not just for fear of forgetting (like for a Hifz student or teacher) but also for other valid reasons:

  • For reciting your daily awrad (litanies).
  • For seeking healing and protection (Ruqyah).
  • For teaching or learning.
  • For simply gaining the reward of recitation.

Can We Learn Quran During Periods?

Yes, you can  learn Quran furing periods. The Rajih (stronger) opinion, rooted in the mercy of Allah’s law, is that a menstruating woman is not cut off from the Book of Allah.

Learning the Quran encompasses many beautiful acts, all of which remain open to you:

1. You Can Recite

As we have established, you may recite the Quran, whether from memory (which is preferred) or by reading from your phone or tablet.

This is essential for students of Hifz, teachers, or any sister who finds comfort in recitation.

2. You Can Read from the Mushaf (with a barrier)

If you are in a formal class and need to use the physical Mushaf, you may do so by handling it with gloves or a clean cloth, as explained before.

3. You Can Listen Intently

Listening to the Quran is a profound act of worship in itself, one that softens the heart. It is fully permissible and an excellent way to review your memorization or learn correct pronunciation.

4. You Can Study Tafseer (Commentary)

This period is a perfect opportunity to deepen your understanding of the verses. You can hold and read books of Tafseer or translations, as the prohibition on touching only applies to the physical, all-Arabic Mushaf.

5. You Can Perfect Your Tajweed

You can study the theoretical rules of Tajweed—learning the makharij (articulation points) and sifaat (attributes) of the letters—even when you are not reciting. This strengthens your foundation for when you resume full recitation.

Conclusion

The consensus of scholars affirms that while touching the Mushaf directly is restricted during menstruation, reciting or reading the Quran remains permissible from memory or digital means.

Using phones or tablets is fully allowed, as these devices are not considered Mushafs, and no state of wudu is required to handle them. Barriers such as gloves or cloths also make it possible to read from the physical Quran when needed.

Menstruation does not sever a woman’s link with the Quran; it simply redefines how she interacts with it.

Through recitation, listening, studying Tafseer, or perfecting Tajweed, she continues to worship and learn—embracing the mercy and wisdom embedded in Allah’s law.
